Three U.S. gas stations make an architectural
website’s top 10 of such
designs in the world. C-store customers
are selecting where they stop
based on restroom quality. And some
Congressional lawmakers are hoping
to erase summer limits on selling E15.
These are petroleum industry headlines
from the U.S.
3 of Top 10 Filling Stations in US
The U.S. is home to three of the 10 best filling
stations in the world, according to Design
Curial, the London-based website devoted
to architecture, design and art.
The top 10 list is based on “remarkable design,
innovation and the structure’s relationship
with its surroundings.”

Pops Gas Station, No. 2 on the list, attracts
road warriors on Route 66 with a 66-foot-tall
LED soda bottle that lights the night and represents
the 700 signature sodas and sparkling
water sold there. The 5,500-squarefoot
gas station, diner and souvenir shop
was completed in August 2007. A cantilever
acts as a canopy over the forecourt, and
the interior features floor-to ceiling windows.
Nos. 8 and 10 on the list are both in LA.
Helios House was the first U.S. gas station
to be submitted for LEED certification. The
building, completed in 2007, was built on
the site of a previous gas station but was
constructed using upcycled and sustainable
materials such as recycled stainless
steel triangles that form the canopy. The
drought-tolerant roof collects rainwater for
irrigation, and 90 solar panels contribute to
the building’s 16 percent reduction in energy

Union 76 Beverly Hills was completed in
1965 for the Los Angeles International Airport,
which is why it resembles a spaceship.
The illuminated red roof is shaped like a
boomerang and has been featured in films
and on at least one album cover. The airport
no longer owns the gas station. The full list
of 2017 winners are:
1. Rest Area Niemenharju in Finland
2. Pops Arcadia Route 66 in Oklahoma, U.S.
3 .Batumi Petrol Station in Batumi, Georgia
4. NP Gas Station in Madrid
5.Orival Gas Station in Orival, Belgium
6. Esso Mobil Station in Leicestershire, U.K.

Survey: QuikTrip Restrooms Best
Gas station customers surveyed by
GasBuddy recently said Tulsa, Oklahoma
based convenience store QuikTrip has
the highest-rated restrooms in nine states —
more than any other brands. Chevron came
in at No. 2, winning five West Coast states.
Sheetz and Wawa each won four states.
Sixty-four percent of respondents said one
of their road trip fears is the need to use the
restroom while not knowing when one will be
available. In addition, 69 percent said they
wouldn’t visit a gas station with fewer than 3
out of 5 stars. Reviewers may rate C-stores
and restrooms using the free GasBuddy
app. Since the feature launched in 2016,
“GasBuddies” have filed some 7.2 million
individual ratings of more than 140,000 retail
locations where gasoline is sold.
Congress Could Boost E15 Sales
A bipartisan Congressional proposal seeks
to allow E15 retail sales from June 1 to Sept.
15. Passing the Consumer and Fuel Retailer
Choice Act would mean equal treatment of
E15, which contains 15 percent ethanol, and
E10. The Environmental Protection Agency
limits the Reid Vapor Pressure (RVP), a
measure of how quickly fuel evaporates, to 9
pounds during summer. In 1990, Congress
granted fuels with up to 10 percent ethanol
a 1-pound waiver, meaning those fuels
could be sold year-round. Although the EPA
approved E15 retail sales, the RVP waiver
does not apply to E15.
If the proposal passes, more retailers likely
would offer E15. Currently some 650 locations
in 28 states offer E15.
